What is considered as a Metro service?

"Metro Service" means the public transport service offered on lines 1, 2 and 3 of the Bilbao Metropolitan Railway (FMB).

What is Line 3 of the Metro Service?

Line 3 runs between Kukullaga and Matiko. It has 7 stations: Kukullaga, Otxarkoaga, Txurdinaga, Zurbaranbarri, Zazpikaleak/Casco Viejo, Uribarri and Matiko.

Line 3 is linked to Euskotren's Txorierri line and the Euskotren Main Line, but Line 3 per se comprises only these 7 stations.

What tickets can be used on the Metro Service?

  • Purse-card tickets on Barik cards: Creditrans and Gizatrans
  • Season tickets on Barik cards: Bidai 50, Bidai 70, Bidai Oro, Gazte 70 and Gazte Oro.
  • Metro Service single tickets
  • The Metro Bilbao Anual 26 ticket

How are Metro Service journeys considered?

Journeys combining lines 1, 2 and 3 of the Metro Service are considered as single journeys, with fares depending on the travel zones.

For example:

  • If you travel with a Creditrans ticket from Algorta to Matiko: €1.08
  • If you travel with a Creditrans ticket from Otxarkoaga to Indautxu: €0.91
  • If you travel from Algorta to Matiko with a limited-journey season ticket valid for those zones: a single journey is charged for.
  • If you travel from Otxarkoaga to Indautxu with a limited-journey season ticket valid for those zones: a single journey is charged for.

How are journeys to and transfers at the Metro Service Zazpikaleak/Casco Viejo station considered?

Journeys with transfers at Zazpikaleak/Casco Viejo station between Line 1/Line 2 and Line 3 of the Metro Service are considered as single journeys, i.e. connecting from one of these lines to another within a 15 minute interval is free at this station, provided that the ticket is validated correctly for each stage of the journey..

On journey connections beginning at Zazpikaleak/Casco Viejo users may not enter with a negative balance on their card: cards must be topped up in transit between L1/L2 and L3 or vice versa (the minimum balance required is €0.00).

Similarly, journeys made with limited season tickets which are validated correctly within 15 minutes are counted as a single journey.

Connections between L1/L2 and L3 made anywhere other than Zazpikaleak/Casco Viejo station are considered as two separate journeys.

What is the time limit for free connections between Line1/Line 2 and Line 3 at Zazpikaleak/Casco Viejo station?

15 minutes.

How are journeys counted if I enter or leave from a station outside lines 1, 2 or 3 of the Metro Service?

If you enter or leave via a station not belonging to lines 1, 2 or 3 of the Metro Service your journey is NOT considered as a single Metro Service journey but as separate journeys and you will be charged the fare applied by each operator wherever the journey takes place or charged for two journeys if you are travelling with a limited season ticket.

For example:

  • If you enter via Usansolo station on the Euskotren General Line and then transfer to the Metro at Zazpikaleak/Casco Viejo station and travel to Indautxu you will be charged for two journeys. i.e.:
    • If you are travelling with a purse card the first journey is billed at the Euskotren fare and the second at the Metro Bilbao fare (with a 20% discount on the total fare for transferring between operators if you use a Creditrans ticket on a Barik card)
    • If you are travelling with a journey-limited season ticket two journeys will be charged for
  • If you enter via Derio station on the Euskotren Txorierri Line and then transfer to the Metro at Zazpikaleak/Casco Viejo station and travel to Deusto you will be charged for two journeys. i.e.
    • If you are travelling with a purse card the first journey is billed at the Euskotren fare and the second at the Metro Bilbao fare (with a 20% discount on the total fare for transferring between operators if you use a Creditrans ticket on a Barik card).
    • If you are travelling with a journey-limited season ticket two journeys will be charged for

If you are travelling with a Gizatrans ticket on lines 1, 2 and 3 of the Metro Service you will be charged the Metro Bilbao fare, but if you enter or leave via a station outside the Metro Service you will be charged the Euskotren fare. If you leave via a non-Metro Service station you will be charged the difference between the Gizatrans fare on Metro Bilbao (which was charged to your card on entering) and the Euskotren fare.

For example:

  • From Algorta to Matiko: €0.35
  • From Matiko to Durango: €0.60 (journey by Euskotren)
  • From Algorta to Derio: €0.35 (journey by Metro from Algorta to Zazpikakeak/Casco Viejo) + €0.35 (journey by Euskotren from Zazpikaleak/Casco Viejo to Derio.)

What is the minimum card balance required to travel?

  • - If the journey begins at a station on Line 3 the minimum balance required on entry is that set by Metro Bilbao, i.e. the fare for a 1-zone journey.
  • - If the journey begins at a station on the Euskotren Txorierri or Main lines the minimum balance required on entry is that set by Euskotren, i.e. the fare for a 2-zone journey.

Can I overdraw the balance on my card on exiting?

Yes. If you leave via a station on Line 3 or on the Eusktren Txorierri or Main lines you can overdraw the balance on your card up to the maximum permitted by the system, i.e. €2.90.

But if you overdraw your card and then attempt to make journey connection at Zazpikaleak/Casco Viejo you will not be permitted to enter with a negative balance, and must top up your card in transit between L1/L2 and L3 or vice versa (the minimum balance required is €0.00).

What happens if the ticket is not validated on entry or exit on a journey with a connection at Zazpikaleak/Casco Viejo?

  • If you fail to validate your ticket on entry or exit on L3 you will be charged the highest Eiskaltren fare (for a 5-zone journey) and the connection at Zazpikaleak/Casco Viejo station is not free: you will also be charged for the relevant journey.
  • If you fail to validate your ticket on entry or exit on L1 or L2 of Metro Bilbao you will be charged the highest Metro Bilbao fare.
